Pakistan/The Netherlands: Aasia Bibi’s lawyer returns home to fight her case

Aasia Bibi’s lawyer Saiful Malook on Sunday returned to Pakistan and is set to attend the hearing on January 29 (Tuesday) of the review petition against the Christian woman’s acquittal on blasphemy charges.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Malook confirmed that he had arrived in Lahore and would attend the top court’s hearing.

“I want to make it clear that I intend to permanently stay in Pakistan but there are still security concerns,” he said.

Malook also appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan to provide him security in view of the threats he had received.

“In the Netherlands, I fought Pakistan’s case,” he said, adding that, he also tried to remove surrounding the country’s position in the case.

Chinese human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang was sentenced to four years and six months in prison on Monday morning, a court in northeast China said.

Wang was found  “guilty of subversion of state power,” the Tianjin No.2 Intermediate People’s Court said on its official website.

The prominent lawyer was detained in the “709 crackdown” in August 2015 which saw a wide-reaching clampdown on Chinese activists and their legal aides.

Le dernier des persécutés de la répression 709 condamné à quatre ans et six mois de prison pour «subversion du pouvoir de l’État»

Dernière des victimes de la grande « Répression 709 » contre les avocats à n’avoir pas était jugée, Wang Quanzhang, 42 ans, un des membres du cabinet d’avocats Fengrui à Pékin, a été condamné à quatre ans et six mois de prison, par le deuxième tribunal populaire intermédiaire de Tianjin.
Le 26 décembre 2018, le procès s’était déroulé à huis clos au nom du “secret d’État”. La tenue même du procès n’avait pas été annoncée officiellement. La date n’en a été divulguée que par son épouse à la veille de Noël. Une cinquantaine de policiers surveillait l’audience au tribunal de Tianjin, son épouse était assignée à résidence. Il y a eu deux interpellations notamment d’un manifestant porteur d’une pancarte “Libérez l’innocent Wang Quanzhang ».
En fin de journée, le tribunal a finalement annoncé que le procès avait bien eu lieu et que le verdict avait été mis en délibéré jusqu’à une date non précisée. Il a été rendu le 18 janvier.
