The Philippines: Odicta lawyer shot dead

ILOILO City-based lawyer Edeljulio Romero was gunned down by still unidentified suspects in Roxas City Friday.

He succumbed to a gunshot wound on the back of his head, initial reports indicated.

Romero was linked to the late suspected drug lord Melvin Odicta who was also shot dead in Caticlan, Aklan in August 2016.

In a statement, Chief Superintendent John Bulalacao, Police Regional Office-6 director, confirmed Romero’s death.

“We confirm the shooting incident in Capiz, Iloilo at about 1:00 PM today which resulted in the death of Atty. Edeljulio Romero committed by three unidentified suspects who are now the subject of a hot pursuit operation by our local police force. We are already conducting investigation on this incident to identify and arrest those responsible. We also confirm as inquired by our media friends that the victim is a High Value Target Level 3 (HVT 3) in the Illegal Drug Personality List. Pakistan: Protest against police: KP lawyers boycott courts

The lawyers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday boycotted courts to protest police violence against their colleagues in Quetta. The lawyers observed the strike on the call of Pakistan Bar Council and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council.

Syed Abdul Fayaz, President, PHC Bar Association and Wakeel Zaman, President Peshawar Bar Association, condemned the incident and demanded action against the police and district administration.

They asked for probing the police firing, physical attack, manhandling and torture of lawyers including Hadi Shakil Ahmed, senior Advocate Supreme Court and Former Vice Chairman, Pakistan Bar Council, Qari Noorul Haq, President, Baluchistan Bar Association, Badar Munir Advocate and others. The lawyers’ representatives said some of their colleagues have been detained in police lock-up. They demanded the Balochistan government to take action against the police officials involved in the incident.

Egypt: Egyptian rights group says authorities disappeared 2 lawyers

A spokesman for an Egyptian human rights organization says authorities have moved two detained lawyers to an unknown location and they haven’t been heard from since.

Ahmed el-Attar of Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms says Thursday that a court had ordered the release of Ezzat Ghoniem and Azzoz Mahgoub on Sept. 4 pending investigations into accusations they were plotting against Egypt, but the two disappeared while in custody on Sept. 14.

He says the men’s families tried to visit them but were told they had already been released. Amnesty International says the men have been forcibly disappeared and are at great risk of torture, and urges authorities to make their whereabouts known.

Both Ghoneim and Mahgoub supported victims of alleged police torture, the disappeared and their families in Egypt.

India: State Vs Activists: Top Court To Decide Today On House Arrest

Today, the Top Court is likely to pronounce, its verdict on a plea by historian Romila Thapar. The plea seeks the immediate release of five rights activists in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case and an SIT probe into their arrest.

Chief Justice Dipak Misra-led bench had reserved the judgment on September 20 after counsel for both parties, including senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Harish Salve and Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, concluded their submissions.

Justices A M Khaniwlkar and D Y Chandrachud,are also the part of the decision making bench and had asked the Maharashtra police to file their case diary pertaining to the ongoing investigation in the case.

Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha, are the the five activists, under arrest at their respective homes since August 29.

Ms Thapar, economists Prabhat Patnaik and Devaki Jain, sociology professor Satish Deshpande and human rights lawyer Maja Daruwala’s pleas is seeking an independent probe into the arrests and the immediate release of the activists.

The arrested of the five activist was made on August 28 by the Maharashtra police in connection with an FIR lodged following a conclave — ‘Elgaar Parishad’ — held on December 31 last year that had later triggered violence at Koregaon-Bhima village in the state.

On September 19, the Supreme Court said that it would look into the case with a “hawk’s eye” as “liberty cannot be sacrificed at the altar of conjectures”.

The late Argentinian prosecutor Alberto Nisman established that Iran was responsible for organizing the bombing, which was carried out by a Hezbollah suicide bomber.
