Jammu & Kashmir/India: Doda lawyer Babur again arrested, family says no charges against him

Doda’s hero, Advocate Babur, arrested under PSA

The family members of a lawyer from Doda alleged that their son has been detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police without any ‘charges’.

Advocate Hassan Babur Nehru, who is a social and human rights activist in Chenab Valley, was earlier booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and was released after spending seven months in jail on the orders of High Court.

Last year, the family says, he was also implicated in a false and fabricated case in which he was discharged by the court.

Police detained him near Assar block of Doda and later shifted him to a Police station in Parade Jammu. According to sources, he was presently lodged in Trikuta Nagar Police station.

“He was in a Ramban court to resolve a marital dispute with his wife and was carrying 3 lakh rupees with him. The matter was deferred and he was on his way home when the police detained him,” said Babur’s mother, Farida Begum.

The family demanded immediate release and alleged police of fabricating false cases and putting him in jail on one pretext or the other.

IGP Jammu, S.D Singh Jamwal said: “He is named in various FIRs and legal action will be taken against him.”

The Philippines: Local IBP chapter asks NBI to probe slay of lawyer

THE Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Negros Occidental chapter has passed a resolution Friday, September 7, requesting the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)–Bacolod to conduct a parallel investigation on the death of defense lawyer Rafael Atotubo.

Atotubo was shot to death by two unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants outside of his house at Barangay 20 on August 23.

Six members of the group, including its president Arnel Lapore, convened yesterday at the Sugarland Hotel in Bacolod City.

Lapore said there is still no development on the investigation from the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO).

“We’ve already been waiting for two weeks now, and nothing has happened,” he added.

Lapore said they will send a copy of the resolution to the NBI-Bacolod office on Monday but they will not give a timeline to the bureau to solve the murder case.

“We will just leave it to them,” Lapore said.

BCPO has welcomed any help from other law enforcement agencies and units that will also investigate Atotubo’s death.

Policemen and forensics investigate around a crime scene on October 16, 2012 outside a petrol station in French Corsican island's town of Ajaccio, after the lawyer Antoine Sollacaro was shot dead inside his car. Sollacaro, 63, was former lawyer of Corsican independence activist Yvan Colonna, sentenced to life in prison in 2011 for the murder in 1998 of French prefect in Corsica, Claude Erignac.
