Maldives: Jailed Maldives ex-pres’ attorney Amal gets death threats: reports

International legal counsel to jailed former president Mohamed Nasheed Amal Clooney has ramped up security after death threats, British media reported Sunday.

Nasheed was jailed for 13 years in March on terror charges related to the arrest of then Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed when he was still president in 2012.

In addition to the former president’s local attorneys, he is represented by a high profile international legal team which includes legal heavyweights such as London-based human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, her fellow British attorney Ben Emmerson and her Washington based co-counsel Jared Genser.

In a report, British tabloid Metro.co.uk said it is thought that Amal Clooney, who is married to actor George Clooney, now has full-time security after receiving the worrying messages, even when she visits local restaurants just 300 yards from her house.
