Nigeria: Lawyer Garricks Anyanwu, Found Dead In Imo State, Foul Play Suspected, Classmates Demand Justice

A lawyer, Garricks Anyanwu, Esq., was found dead in his hometown of Orodo, Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State, on Friday, April 5, 2024. His decomposing body was discovered in a bush four days after he was reported missing.

According to sources close to the family, Anyanwu’s burial is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

Anyanwu, Esq., a graduate of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) class of 2003, was well-known within the legal community. His classmates have expressed shock and sadness over his untimely death and are calling on the authorities to investigate the murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.

One of his classmates, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “Garricks was a brilliant lawyer and a kind-hearted individual. His death is a great loss to our profession and society at large. We urge the police and other relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in their investigation and ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to book.”

The incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over the safety of legal practitioners in Nigeria. In recent years, there have been several reports of lawyers being kidnapped, assaulted, and even killed in the line of duty or in their personal lives.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other legal bodies have repeatedly called on the government to take proactive measures to ensure the protection of lawyers and to address the rising insecurity in the country.

As the investigation into Anyanwu’s murder continues, his family, friends, and colleagues remain hopeful that justice will be served and that steps will be taken to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
