Egypt: Lawyer Islam Salama forcibly disappeared for 19 days after remand detention order expires

The whereabouts of lawyer Islam Salama have been unknown for 19 days, three weeks after an order for his release on bail from a Mahalla prosecution office.

Salama, who has served as a defense lawyer on several cases involving forced disappearances, has been forcibly disappeared three times in the nine months since he was arrested last May, when security forces stormed his home, seized his mobile phone and took him to an unknown location.

Lawyer Mokhtar Mounir told Mada Masr that Salama’s defense team submitted on Thursday a petition to the Public Prosecutor inquiring about his whereabouts and complaining about his being detained for no substantial reason.

Salama’s legal counsel also issued a statement on Thursday calling the disappearance “a flagrant violation of all constitutional and legal rights.”

Although Salama’s defense team has repeatedly called on the Lawyers Syndicate to intervene, the syndicate has not issued a statement on the matter nor sent a representative to attend any of Salama’s interrogation sessions.

Salama has been forcibly disappeared three times since he was arrested on May 25 and held in remand detention pending investigation into a case dating back to 2018.

Egyptian lawyer Islam Salama was then added to a new case (Case No. 7869/2020). He was ordered released on January 16, 2021 on LE 2,000 fine. After the fine was paid and instead of being let go, Islam was again disappeared.

His location remains unknown today.

Egyptian lawyer Islam Salama has been forcibly disappeared for the 2nd time.

On May 25, 2020, Islam was arrested per Case No. 1375/2018 & detained. He was ordered released on Oct 14 on probationary measures. Instead of being released, he was disappeared until Nov 30.

Le bâtonnier de l’Ordre national des avocats tunisiens (Onat), Brahim Bouderbala, a indiqué, dans une déclaration accordée ce soir du samedi 6 février 2021, à la TAP, qu’il s’est rendu au poste de sécurité à Tunis, dans le cadre de l’agression subie cet après-midi par trois avocats en marge de la marche commémorant l’assassinat de Chokri Belaïd.

Il a précisé qu’il a demandé au parquet d’être présent sur les lieux pour l’ouverture d’une enquête, étant donné que l’agression a eu lieu dans les environs du poste et afin que les preuves ne soient pas altérées.

Trois avocats – Yassine Azzaza, Abdennaceur Aouini et Rahal Jallali – ont été agressés aujourd’hui par des agents de la police au niveau de la rue Ibn Khaldoun près du poste de police du 7e. Des photos montrant l’agression de l’avocat Abdennaceur Aouini assailli par des policiers ont aussi circulé sur la toile.

Des avocats, politiciens, citoyens, syndicalistes et activistes de la société civile ont, rappelons-le, investi les artères latérales à l’avenue Habib Bourguiba – aux accès bloqués – dans le cadre d’une manifestation organisée à l’occasion de la commémoration du 8^e anniversaire de l’assassinat de l’avocat et leader de la gauche, Chokri Belaïd.
