Greece: LAWYERS WITHOUT BORDERS – GREECE- CALLS FOR INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION DUE TO A CRACKDOWN ON LAWYERS IN GREECE – ARBITRARY ARREST & DETENTION OF LAWYERS FOR (AND DURING) THEM PERFORMING THEIR DUTIES

LWB Greece expresses its urgent concern and calls for international attention on a new crackdown on lawyers defending human rights and liberties in the context of the pandemic. LWB has been informed by reliable sources about the following alleged incidents:

On 6/12/2020, in the 12th anniversary of the murder by a police bullet of the 15 year old Alexis Grigoropoulos, the chief of police issued a decision forbidding to citizens to pay a tribute to the deceased child by leaving a flower to the monument of his death respecting all social distancing measures, and thus make a point about the struggle against injustice and police brutality and impunity.

In order to avert such a tribute of by-passers and ensure respect to the Chief’s decision, thousands of policemen were sent to the vicinity of the place where Alexis was murdered; the police had an order to detain by-passers in this area, allegedly because they did not comply with the measures taken due to the pandemic.

Two high profile lawyers went on spot to defend the rights of the people who, after the intervention of the police, had now become a “spontaneous gathering” of approximately 50 people, being denied of their freedom of movement without being given any information about the ground of such restriction.

The people’s lawyers also became target of the described attack to the Rule of Law.

Lawyer Thanasis Kampagiannis, a member of the Board of the Athens Bar Association, and lawyer Costas Papadakis, also widely known for his anti-fascist defense, were arbitrarily arrested while performing their duties.

They were initially „adduced“ to the police directorate, placed in a bus together with dozens of the people who had asked for their legal support.

The lawyers were then arbitrarily detained for hours.

After a few hours in detention it became clear, though, that the citizens, as well as the lawyers, were not adduced, but arrested, on the pretext of allegedly breaching pandemic’s restriction of movement measures; clearly, the lawyers, since the onset of their encounter with the policemen, were on spot in the context of their Function: they were asked by people to defend and uphold their human rights.

Iran/Canada: Honorary doctor of laws degree bestowed upon imprisoned human rights lawyer

08/12/20

Queen’s University has bestowed an honorary doctor of laws degree upon an Iranian human rights lawyer currently serving a 38-year prison sentence while recovering from a hunger strike and COVID-19.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, also a journalist and activist, has been imprisoned a number of times for her work as a defence attorney, and in 2018 she was imprisoned and later sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes for advocating against the compulsory hijab in Iran.

Lawyers around the world, as well as world leaders including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, condemn her imprisonment.

“Over the past 10 years, much of which she has spent in prison, Ms. Sotoudeh has shown immense courage and conviction in her own believes and advocating for the rights of others,” Queen’s principal and vice-chancellor Patrick Deane said.

Three Queen’s students nominated Sotoudeh for the honorary degree in 2019. Queen’s approved the nomination this past January. While the degree was set to be granted at the next convocation ceremony, the university said it decided to bestow the honour early as Sotoudeh’s health continues to deteriorate and just ahead of International Human Rights Day on Thursday.

Irwin Cotler, Sotoudeh’s legal team lead, a former Canadian member of Parliament and founder of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights in Montreal, accepted the degree on his client’s behalf.

He described Sotoudeh as an iconic, courageous human rights lawyer who embodies the struggle for human rights in Iran. He explained that her husband and daughter have also been arrested for simply being related to Sotoudeh.

“In a word, a pattern of unjust persecution and prosecution for nothing other than Nasrin upholding the rule of law, for nothing other but being punished for supporting the very values the underpin what being an Iranian is all about,” Cotler said. “Indeed it is punishment for Nasrin’s fidelity for the rule of law and amounts to criminalization of innocence.”
