Micronesia/USA: Rachelle Bergeron, US prosecutor murdered on Yap island, had ‘dangerous job’: sister

October 16, 2019

The American prosecutor gunned down outside her home on a tiny Pacific island had a “dangerous job,” her sister told The Post when asked if anyone wanted her dead.

Wisconsin native Rachelle Bergeron, who served as acting attorney general on the remote island of Yap, was fatally shot in her chest and leg on Monday night — shaking the sleepy state she has called home since 2015.

Her sister, Nicole Stone, said Bergeron cared deeply about her role as the island’s chief prosecutor, highlighting a case she worked on in 2016 involving two dozen migrants detained on Yap in the Pacific Ocean.

“She was extremely passionate about securing better conditions for these migrants that ended up on Yap,” Stone said Wednesday.

The 33-year-old worked as a human rights lawyer in the Big Apple before moving to the island in the Federated States of Micronesia as the assistant attorney general.

She continued her work on the island — joining the Yap State Human Trafficking Task Force. The island has been identified as a major human trafficking source by UNICEF.

When asked if Bergeron had made any enemies, Stone said the family had been warned not to make any public speculation until they are back safe from Yap with her body.

“She did have a dangerous job,” she said.

Egypt: Abduction of Amr Imam and physical assault of Gamal Eid, members of ANHRI

October 17, 2019

EGY 008/ 1019 / OBS 081
Abduction / Enforced disappearance /
Physical assaultThe Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a partnership of FIDH and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), requests your urgent intervention in the following situation in Egypt.

Description of the situation:The Observatory has been informed by reliable sources about the abduction and enforced disappearance of Mr. Amr Imam, human rights lawyer at the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), and the physical assault of Mr. Gamal Eid, ANHRI’s Director.

According to the information received, on October 16, 2019 at dawn, Mr. Amr Imam was abducted by police officers from his home in Cairo. While Mr. Amr Imam managed to publish a brief post about his arrest on Facebook, the security forces then refused him his right to make a phone call to his lawyer or family members. At the time of publication of this Urgent Appeal, Mr. Amr Imam’s fate and whereabouts remained unknown, despite attempts to locate him. In the previous days, Mr. Amr Imam had publicly announced his intention to start a hunger strike to denounce police abuses, including multiple cases of abduction and enforced disappearances, acts of torture and ill-treatment as well as the lack of accountability from the of police officers for their crimes.

Moreover, on October 10, 2019, Mr. Gamal Eid was beaten repeatedly with the butt of a gun by an unknown attacker who stole his cellphone, tried to steal his backpack and fired a shot in the air while fleeing the scene with an accomplice who had a motorcycle. The beatings resulted in a fractured rib and bruises for Mr. Gamal Eid. The incident happened on main street and during busy hours (between 6 and 8pm). The Observatory fears that this act constitutes an act of harassment targeting Mr. Eid for his human rights activities.

The Observatory recalls that the abduction of Mr. Amr Imam comes a few days after the abduction, torture and arbitrary detention of journalist Esraa Abdel Fattah [1], as well as the arbitrary detention and torture of blogger Alaa Abdel Fattah and his lawyer, Mohamed Al Baqer [2]. Other human rights defenders and lawyers were also arrested in this last wave of arrests, such as women’s rights defender Asmaa Dabees [3] and human rights lawyer Mahienour El Massry [4].

Turkey: Court of Appeals Upholds 159-Year Prison Term for Contemporary Lawyers’ Association Members

October 16, 2019

The court has rejected all the objections on the merits, making the final judgment for six lawyers. The arrest of the six lawyers will continue.

İstanbul Regional Court of Justice 2nd Penal Chamber (court of appeals) has announced its decision in the case where lawyers from the Contemporary Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) were given a 159-year prison term in total.

All objections have been rejected on the merits.

This is the final judgment for six lawyers who were sentenced to less than five years in prison, therefore they will not be able to appeal the verdict.

Twelve lawyers who were sentenced to more than five years in prison can appeal the decision at the Court of Cassation.

Reason for the refusal: Court’s opinion and assessment

The court of appeals, in its verdict dated October 8, explained the reason for refusing the objections as follows:

“According to defendants’ statements of defense, the proceedings, the evidence collected and displayed at the court, the opinion and assessment of the court in accordance with the results of the investigation, the content of the case file, it has been understood that there is no procedural or meritorious unlawfulness in the court’s decision, there is no deficiency in the evidence and proceedings that the actions are considered correct and in accordance with the type of crime that is stated in the law, the sentence is implemented in the legal context…”

China/Hong Kong: Chinese lawyer Chen Qiushi, censured over Hong Kong social media posts, vows to keep speaking out

A Chinese rights lawyer who says he was harassed and silenced by mainland authorities after reporting on the Hong Kong protests in August made his social media return at the weekend in a video in which he vowed to continue to speak out on the issue.
Chen Qiushi

–– who had 740,000 followers on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, before his account was deleted – had been out of the public eye since making the broadcasts in which he challenged state media reports that the people leading the protests in the city were rioters and separatists.

Most of those involved were peaceful, the 34 year old said. “Not all of them are rioters.”

Days later, he was called back to Beijing under pressure from mainland authorities. All of his social media accounts were deleted and his video broadcasts disappeared along with them.

But the Beijing-based lawyer and online commentator made his comeback on Sunday when a video he said was made in the northern coastal city of Qingdao on October 2 was shared on Weibo.

“Since coming back from Hong Kong, I’ve been taken to meetings with officials from many departments,” he said, adding that the film was the first he had made since returning to the mainland.
