China/Hong Kong: Chinese human rights lawyer Chen Qiushi missing after return from Hong Kong protests trip

August 21, 2019

  • Authorities could try to silence Chen after he was observed rallies and posted videos about them on mainland social media, activists say

Human rights watchers and activists have expressed concerns for the safety of a mainland Chinese lawyer who went missing after visiting Hong Kong on the weekend to observe protests in the city.

Chen Qiushi, 33, a Beijing-based lawyer and public commentator, arrived in Hong Kong on Saturday as a tourist.

He attended a rally organised by pro-government supporters that day and also observed Sunday’s demonstration involving hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters.

While in Hong Kong, Chen uploaded several video diaries and observations about the protests to his Twitter-like Weibo account, which has more than 770,000 followers. The diaries have since been deleted from his Weibo account but are still available on YouTube.

In his last video filmed at Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday night, Chen said he was forced to cut his trip short and return to the mainland because of pressure from mainland police and lawyers associations. He said he could be disqualified from practising law because of his visit.

“I’m showing everyone my lawyer’s licence here. Why? Because it may not be mine any more after I return,” he said.

Assault case: Lawyers up in arms against city police

The strike by lawyers on Tuesday entered its third day. The lawyers have been protesting against the Bathinda police for registering a case against former District Bar Association president Navdeep Singh Jeeda.

On Tuesday, they protested on the road outside the SSP office. District Bar Association (DBA) president Kanwaljit Singh Kutti said, “We have given a call for a state-level protest for Wednesday and advocates will suspend work in the district.”

He said they want cancellation of a case registered against Navdeep Jeeda and action against police constable Ranjit Singh.

While addressing the protesters, lawyers alleged that without holding any probe into this incident, the police announced the verdict by registering a case against advocate Navdeep Jeeda. They said no action had been taken on the complaint of Jeeda against Ranjit Singh, who fractured his nose.

Members of Punjabi Maa Boli Satkar Sabha have announced their support to the lawyers in this incident.

South Africa: Lawyers strike ‘spells disaster’ amid court chaos

The lawyers are aggrieved by lack of security at their offices, as well as the heavy workload, among others.

Court officials have told of a chaotic Monday at the courts during the first day of the strike by Legal Aid SA lawyers, with cases unheard and postponed.

A court orderly at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, which had a total of 48 old cases and more than 20 first appearances on the roll, said none of the legal aid lawyers from the Wynberg offices reported for duty.

“The state had no other choice but to request that the matters be postponed. If this is not resolved speedily, it could spell a complete disaster,” the court official, who did not want to be named, said.

The public legal representation agency, which assists about 725,000 people each year, according to its chief executive officer Vidhu Vedalankar, confirmed there were disruptions, with Gauteng the most affected.

Spokesperson Mfanafuthi Shabangu said there were minor disruptions in the flow of cases, particularly in Benoni, Palm Ridge and Randburg Magistrate’s Court.

Iran: Women’s Rights Defender Sends Letter From Iran Prison

August 20, 2019

Nasrin Sotoudeh

A prominent Iranian lawyer and human rights activist, Nasrin Sotoudeh, has managed to send a letter out of Tehran’s infamous prison, Evin, where she is behind bars.

While incarcerated, Sotoudeh says in her bold letter, “I hear some news related to the women of my motherland that showers me with joy and happiness.”

In the letter, published on the Facebook account of Ms. Sotoudeh’s husband, Reza Khandan, the 56-year-old winner of Sakharov Prize has cheerfully praised Iranian women’s recent moves to reject compulsory hijab and defend the right to choose their dress mode.

“Iranian women’s attempts are mainly praiseworthy for the fact that they have chosen a non-violent approach towards seeking their right to dress freely,” Sotoudeh has stressed, noting that Iranian women have been struggling for their lost rights and always repelled by “religious edicts” that are hundreds of years old.

Referring to the Islamic Revolution that led to the downfall of Iran’s last monarch, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the imprisoned attorney has asserted, “Forty years ago, the people of Iran were led to an arduous path that women also have had a share in passing through it. [During the past four decades] Iranian women’s bodies and spirits have been targeted by control, day and night” Sotoudeh has lamented, adding, “Nevertheless, they bloomed and grew beyond expectations, and continued their struggle to end the round the clock controls over their bodies and souls.”

Sotoudeh has also praised in her letter the recent anti-compulsory hijab movement, branded as Girls of the Revolution Street.

Turkey: İstanbul governor nixes investigation into Erdoğan bodyguards who beat lawyer

August 20, 2019

The İstanbul Governor’s Office has refused to allow an investigation into two police officers who, as bodyguards of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, reportedly beat a lawyer in İstanbul in April after complaints from the lawyer that the presidential motorcade was holding up traffic, Turkish media reports said on Tuesday.

The governor’s office claimed the police officers used proportionate force; hence, there was no need for an investigation.

Lawyer Sertuğ Sürenoğlu claimed he was beaten by bodyguards of Erdoğan after he objected to the president’s security detail holding up traffic. Sürenoğlu was on a bus trying to get home when the traffic became gridlocked due to road closures to make way for Erdoğan’s motorcade.

As the bus was stuck in traffic for a while, Sürenoğlu complained about the situation to police officers.

Some of Erdoğan’s bodyguards were reportedly in the vicinity and forced Sürenoğlu into a vehicle, where they tied his hands from behind and beat him for two hours.

Later they forced him to sign a statement saying he had insulted President Erdoğan.

After he signed the document, they handed him over the police for formal detention, after which he was put under house arrest by an İstanbul court, although he told the prosecutor what he had experienced.

The lawyer as well as the Ankara Bar Association later filed criminal complaints against Erdoğan’s bodyguards.
