Nabarangpur: Police claim to arrested four operatives of an extortion gang, who are involved in threatening a lawyer with a gun, in Nabarangpur.

Addressing a presser, Nabarangpur SP Nitin Kumar Kar said that four members of the anti-social gang have been arrested while four others are on the run. A pistol, Rs 1 lakh cash, two mobile phone and three bikes also seized from their possession.

The arrested were identified as Umashankar Jogi alias Shibu of Tentulikhunti, Madan Bhatra of Bhatigaon, Krushna Bisoi, and Kruti Harijan of Sindhiguda village, the police said and added that accused Shibu was earlier arrested in the kidnapping case of a business man-Sunil Sahu and released on bail a month ago.

The police further disclosed the identities of other members of the extortion gang and they are- Dasratha Panda, Hemant Panda, Satya Padhi and Golekh Naik. “Efforts are underway to trace them,” the police added.

According to police, on August 4, operatives of the criminal gang threatened an advocate with guns at a mango farm near Sajiguda village in a bid to extort Rs 3 lakh from him. They threatened to eliminate him if he fails to give the extortion amount and also shot two bullets in the air to terrorise the advocate. After getting assurance from the lawyer, the desperadoes sped away on motorcycles.

The following day, the advocate handed over Rs 1.09 lakhs to accused Shibu and pleaded for more time to arrange the rest amount. However, the accused kept on threatening him to eliminate his entire family along with him, if his demand is not fulfilled.

With no other options left, the victim lodged a complaint with the police. On the basis of the plaint, a case (171/19) was registered and a special team launched a probe. Following this, four operatives of the extortion gang were arrested.

India/Jammu & Kashmir: Over 600 politicians & lawyers detained in Jammu & Kashmir up until now

August 17, 2019

Police personnel block the road near the residences of former CMs Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar

Over 600 politicians and lawyers have been detained by authorities in Jammu and Kashmir since the intervening nights of 4 and 5 August, ThePrint has learnt.

A top government functionary told ThePrint that the detained individuals include those arrested by the state police; or put under preventive custody at detention centres; or house arrested; or sent to prisons outside Kashmir.

The figure does not account for other locals, mostly youth, who have been taken into custody from various parts of Kashmir on the apprehension that they may mobilise people in small towns and villages.

“Giving the total headcount will be difficult at the moment because there is no centralised mechanism overlooking the arrests. The arrests are being undertaken by local police. But roughly the numbers are more than 600,” said the government functionary who didn’t wish to be identified.

Turkey: Turkey’s provincial bar associations wage unexpected war on Ankara

August 17, 2019

The Turkish Bar Association, said on Saturday that its president Metin Feyzioğlu would attend a ceremony marking the beginning of the judicial year at the Turkish Presidency’s Congress and Culture Centre in Ankara despite provincial bar associations’ calls for a boycott, Artı Gerçek news site reported.

According to Birgun newspaper, so far 41 provincial bar associations, including those in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, announced that they had declined the invitation to attend the event over ethical concerns. Only three associations have accepted participating the ceremony, according to the same newspaper.

In a statement on Friday, the Istanbul Bar Association said it could not accept a choice of venue that conflicted both with the constitution’s 104th article, which deal with the president’s duties in relation to the judiciary, but also with ethical standards outlined in a legal reform package unveiled in May.

The Ankara Bar Association on Saturday said in a written statement that attending an event for the new judicial year at the presidential venue would mean reproducing the political pressure over the judiciary.

The association said the existing circumstances in Turkey had been surpassing both the rule of law and the separation of powers.

Turkish Bar Association, the umbrella organisation of provincial bodies, said in a written statement that Feyzioğlu would attend the event and deliver a speech.

“What our colleagues and nation expect is solve our problems through dialogue. We fully believe that we can solve those problems together by discussing and through dialogue,” it said.

The European Commission said in its annual report on Turkey published in May that the country had been experiencing considerable backsliding in the rule of law and the judiciary. The EU’s executive body said there were serious concerns on the independence of the judiciary, noting that some 30 percent of the judges and prosecutors were either dismissed or removed following a coup attempt in 2016.

Russia: Activist emerges as new leader of Moscow election protests

August 16, 2019

After a monthlong hunger strike, it’s a struggle for Lyubov Sobol to even raise her hands. Every gesture is difficult for the frail 31-year-old political activist.

This summer’s wave of anti-government protests in Moscow propelled her to the forefront of Russia’s opposition movement. Her name rang out on the streets of the capital, packed with demonstrators angered by the refusal of election authorities to allow independent candidates, including Sobol, on the ballot for the Moscow Duma, or city council.

Sobol has been the prime target of attacks by both the Kremlin-friendly media and election officials.

“The attitude to me is different because I work harder than others and I don’t let people get away with lies,” Sobol told The Associated Press. “I’m not afraid of telling people to their face what I think of them.”

Moscow has been gripped by weekly protests for more than a month over the nearly two dozen candidates from across the political spectrum who have been excluded from the Sept. 8 election.

The numbers continue to grow: the Aug. 10 rally was Russia’s biggest in eight years, and heavy-handed police tactics against peaceful protesters illustrates just how jittery the Kremlin is about the movement. More than 2,000 people were detained, and videos of riot police beating protesters were widely circulated.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov broke a month of silence Monday, praising the police and saying President Vladimir Putin has not spoken on the subject because he views the rallies as too insignificant to worry about.

Sobol, bespectacled and with a pony tail of platinum blond hair, has emerged in what has mostly been a leaderless movement, galvanized by the authorities’ disregard for voters’ rights. Protesters have been chanting her name at the rallies as well as slogans rich with wordplay: Lyubov literally means “love” in Russian.

A graduate of Russia’s most prestigious law school, she has been behind some of the most visible anti-corruption investigations run by the country’s undisputed opposition leader, Alexei Navalny.
