Nigeria: Kidnapping: Our lives in danger, Delta lawyers cry out

August 6, 2019

Kidnapping: Our lives in danger, Delta lawyers cry out

Some members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Delta State have raised concerns over the rise in kidnapping of legal practitioners in the state.

NBA Vice chairman, Asaba branch, Enemhinye Ehigiator, told Daily Sun on behalf of his colleagues that lawyers in the state “have become an endangered species.”

He called on the state government to do more in protecting the lives of the citizens, including lawyers who, according to him, are “defenders of the defenceless in the society.”

“Just this week, Asaba Bar was inundated with the sad news of the kidnap of one of our own. We had barely recovered from the grief and shock of the kidnap and gruesome murder of the very affable KOA Nwashindi, Esq,” Ehigiator.

“This is a clear indication that lawyers in this jurisdiction have become an endangered species. It is quite disheartening to note that the defenders of the defenceless in our society have become defenceless and helpless in the face of unrestrained abductions/attack on members of the noble profession.

The Philippines: Red-tagged personalities seek protection of Oro officials

August 7, 2019

A leader of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, a prominent human rights lawyer and several journalists have sought the protection of the city government after being subjected to relentless red-tagging by unknown groups.

IFI Bishop Felixberto Calang said the red-tagging of leaders of their church had resulted in dwindling attendance during masses.

“Our members are shying away from going to our churches for fear they may be red-tagged too,” Calang said.

Calang together with human rights lawyer Beverly Musni and Pam Sairo and JB Deveza of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines sought protection from City Mayor Oscar Moreno and the City Council on Tuesday.

“It is becoming hard to do our duties because we are too concerned about our safety,” Calang told Moreno.

Woman Lawyer, 35, Shot Dead At Home: UP Police

A state government counsel was shot dead at her residence in yet another fatal attack on women lawyers in Uttar Pradesh.

Etah Superintendent of Police of Sanjay Kumar said government counsel Nutan Yadav was shot dead in her residence on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

“Yadav, 35, was living in the government quarters in Etah opposite the Police Lines. She was unmarried and was living alone,” said Sanjay Kumar.

“A couple of people used to come from her village and stay at her residence. She was found shot dead,” Mr Kumar told PTI.

The victim was a native of Agra.

“Prima facie those visiting her house are under suspicion. Her family members also suspect the role of these persons,” the officer added.

Etah Senior Superintendent of Police Swapnil Mamgain, meanwhile, told reporters that the crime was apparently committed by a close acquaintance of the family.

“The culprit will be booked and action will be initiated,” he said.

Around two months back, Uttar Pradesh Bar Council president Darvesh Yadav was allegedly shot dead in Agra court premises.

Nicaragua: Government Repression Targets Defense Lawyers

August 6, 2019

The story of Attorney Maria Oviedo who went from being a victim of police mistreatment to an accused perpetrator.

Lawyers for both current and released political prisoners have been targets of police harassment. Some now face biased legal processes, harassment, threats and attempts on their lives.

Lawyers of the current and released political prisoners in Nicaragua have now become targets of repression in the face of the de facto State of Siege imposed by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The most recent episode occurred on Friday, July 26 when attorney Maria Oviedo appeared in the Masaya police station for a routine matter, together with her client, released political prisoner Cristian Fajardo. Instead of processing her client’s complaint, she was violently detained by police officials.  She then spent 52 hours in jail.

“From the moment that we arrived at the police station, we were treated grotesquely.
The attitude the police assumed towards us could practically be termed obscene, even though we’ve already become resigned to the mistreatment the defenders of human rights and the released prisoners receive in the police stations,” noted Oviedo.

The lawyer asked Fajardo to leave in order to avoid a larger conflict. When she returned to pick up the documents she had requested be admitted, a police officer shoved her and others dragged her through a hallway within the police station.

“He said: ‘Get out or I’ll throw you out.’ I repeated that I needed him to give me my documents, and that I wasn’t leaving until he gave them to me. At that moment, the police official gave me a shove. I told him to please respect me, and after that you can see in the video what happened,” the lawyer recounted.

Oviedo has been practicing law for 13 years. Before the April rebellion, she had been a prosecutor for the District Attorney’s office, but she resigned due to the human rights violations being committed against the political prisoners that she now defends.

The human rights lawyer remained in jail for 52 hours. She declares that that experience made it clear that “the status of attorney means nothing to them.”
