Kazakhstan: Police In Kazakhstan Detain Activists, Journalists For Second Day

December 17, 2018

Kazakh human rights activists demonstrate in Almaty on December 16.

Police in Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, detained several activists and journalists for the second day in a row on December 17.

Activists said on Facebook that police detained Bakhytzhan Toreghozhina, the head of the human rights foundation Ar.Rukh.Khaq (Dignity, Spirit, Truth), lawyer Gulnara Zhuaspaeva, the founder of the opposition DAT newspaper Ermurat Bapi, civic activists Rinat Rafkhat, Erlan Qaliev, Suiyindik Aldabergenov, Geroikhan Qystaubaev, and several others.

Several activists were not allowed to leave their homes.

Police did not explain the reason for the detentions.

On December 16, police in Almaty briefly detained several human rights activists who attempted to celebrate the 27th anniversary of its independence from the former Soviet Union and to commemorate the victims of police crackdowns in 2011 and 1986.

The December 16 police crackdown came as activists attempted to gather near the Independence monument in central Almaty to commemorate people killed by police during oil worker protests in the western town of Zhanaozen on December 16, 2011 and during mass anti-Soviet demonstrations in Almaty in December 1986.

China: Wife, supporters of detained Chinese lawyer shave heads in protest

December 17, 2018

Li Wenzu head shave

The wife of a detained Chinese lawyer and three supporters shaved their heads on Monday and attempted to submit to a Beijing court a petition protesting her husband’s indefinite detention.

Lawyer Wang Quanzhang, who defended political activists and victims of land seizures, disappeared in the sweep aimed at courtroom critics of the Communist Party authorities.

Charged in January 2016 with alleged “subversion of state power”, Wang is the only one of more than 200 lawyers and activists arrested in the so-called 709 crackdown who is yet to be tried or released.

Statement of the Hong Kong Bar Association
Release of Lawyer Mr Wang Quanzhang Pending Trial

1. The Hong Kong Bar Association (HKBA) refers to an Open Petition Letter initiated by
the Human Rights Commission of the Geneva Bar Association dated 10 December
2018 and supported by a number of national lawyers organizations across the world
concerning the detention of lawyer Mr Wang Quanzhang (“the Petition”).

The HKBA understands that Mr Wang Quanzhang was among the mainland legal professionals interrogated and/or detained in 2015 for alleged offences ranging from “subverting  state power” to “disruption of court order”.

According to the Petition, Mr Wang was  taken by the police on 3 August 2015 and was charged in January 2016 for allegedly  “subverting state power”. He has been held incommunicado for over three years  without any form of due process, and there are  concerns over risks of further  deterioration of his health condition while in detention.

2. On related occasions, the HKBA had previously issued two statements respectively
on 18 July 2015 and 31 March 2017 calling upon the relevant Mainland authorities to
conform to due process and to respect established fundamental human rights of PRC
legal professionals and citizens.

3. The HKBA trusts that the relevant Mainland authorities, prosecutors and judges
responsible for the conduct of the trial are fully aware of such established entitlements and calls upon them to ensure their full and proper implementation.

Given the length of detention of Mr Wang, the HKBA urges that Mr Wang be
released as soon as possible pending trial.

Germany/Turkey: Frankfurt police officers investigated over ‘forming neo-Nazi cell’

December 16, 2018

The officers are being probed for allegedly incited racial hatred and shared illegal Nazi imagery

Prosecutors are investigating four police officers in Frankfurt on suspicion of organizing a neo-Nazi cell after they allegedly accessed confidential data on a prominent Turkish-German lawyer and used it to threaten to murder her baby.

Five police officers have been suspended from duty as prosecutors continue their probe into allegations that the officers incited racial hatred and shared illegal Nazi imagery.

The investigation was sparked after Seda Basay-Yildiz, a solicitor known for representing victims of neo-Nazi violence, reported a chilling death threat against her two-year-old daughter, the Frankfurter Neue Presse newspaper reports.

Ms Basay-Yildiz received a fax in August in which a group calling themselves “NSU 2.0” threatened to murder her child.

The name refers to the National Socialist Underground (NSU), a trio of neo-Nazis who murdered Turkish immigrants before being caught a decade ago.

The fax named Ms Basay-Yildiz’s daughter and stated their full home address. Ms Basay-Yildiz told the newspaper that she is used to receiving death threats from far-Right extremists and normally ignores them but “this time it went too far.”

“I couldn’t figure out where the author of the letter got this information from. That’s why I turned to the police,” the lawyer said.

An internal police investigation revealed that Ms Basay-Yildiz’s private information had been accessed from a computer inside the Frankfurt police department.

Further examination led prosecutors to seize hard drives and mobile phones from five officers. Analysis of the devices showed that the officers regularly exchanged images of Hitler and other Nazi imagery via a WhatsApp group.
