Iran: Nasrin Sotoudeh files a new complaint against Evin Prison officials

November 14, 2018

Nasrin Sotoudeh

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer and political prisoner at Evin Prison, filed a complaint against the head and the judicial deputy of Evin Prison on Sunday, November 11, 2018, for issuing a ban on her visiting rights.

Payam Derafshan, Nasrin Sotoudeh’s attorney, said on Sunday, “The lawsuit filed by Nasrin Sotoudeh against the head and the judicial deputy of Evin Prison was accepted by the Court of Government Employees and referred to the Inspector’s First Branch for investigation.”

After filing the complaint, Mr. Derafshan and Ms. Sotoudeh’s other lawyer appeared before the Inspector’s, explaining the illegal measures of the head and the judicial deputy of Evin Prison. (The official IRNA news agency – November 11, 2018)

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent lawyer and political prisoner, was arrested in June this year after security forces attacked and raided her home. She was taken to Evin Prison. Ms. Sotoudeh was arrested for defending protesters against the compulsory veil.

In October, Nasrin Sotoudeh filed a complaint with the State Security Force Court for Judges against Mohammad Moghisseh, the judge presiding her case.

Payam Derafshan explained that Nasrin Sotoudeh has accused Mohammad Moghisseh of issuing verdicts outside the jurisdiction of the indictment, breaching impartiality in the due process, and ordering illegal arrests, in addition to a number of other breaches. (The official IRNA news agency – September 30, 2018)

According to the testimony of former political prisoners, Mohammad Moghisseh, alias Nasserian, was an interrogator in the 1980s. He presently presides over Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court.

Moghisseh has accused Nasrin Sotoudeh of disseminating propaganda against the state, insulting the mullahs’ supreme leader, and espionage.

Saudi Arabia/Right Livelihood Award: ‘Alternative Nobel’ urges freedom for 3 Saudi activists

The Right Livelihood Award — known as the “Alternative Nobel” — appealed Wednesday on Saudi Arabia to free three jailed human rights defenders and recipients of this year’s prize.

The foundation also urged that the kingdom stop “harassing and killing those who fight” for democracy. Ole von Uexkull, foundation head, said the three jailed Saudi men had “acted through peaceful means” in their activism.

Created in 1980, the annual Right Livelihood Award honors efforts that the prize founder, Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull, felt were being ignored by the Nobel prizes.

In September, the 1 million kronor ($110) cash award was given to three Saudi activists — Abdullah al-Hamid, Mohammad Fahad al-Qahtani and Waleed Abu al-Khair. The honorary award was given to two Latin American anti-corruption crusaders — Thelma Aldana of Guatemala and Colombia’s Ivan Velasquez.

The foundation said two family members and Yahya Assiri, another Saudi rights activist, will attend the award ceremony planned in Stockholm next week.

Al-Qahtani and al-Hamid are founding activists of the Saudi Association for Civil and Political Rights, known by its Arabic acronym HASEM. In 2013, they were sentenced to 10 and 11 years respectively. Soon after, other verdicts followed against nearly a dozen members. The sentences came in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings in the Mideast.

The third Saudi recipient, activist and lawyer Al-Khair, defended a blogger sentenced to prison and lashings over his posts. Al-Khair was arrested in 2014 for signing a statement with dozens of others calling for reforms in the kingdom. He later received a 15-year sentence for “disobeying the ruler” and “harming the reputation of the state by communicating with international organizations,” likely over his work as an outspoken activist.

UAE/UK: Amnesty UK throws birthday party in Manchester for two activists locked up in the UAE

November 14, 2018

The Manchester chapter of Amnesty International (AI) celebrated the birthdays of two human rights activists being detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Members of the public and policymakers were invited to St Peter’s Square for birthday cake and to sign the petition calling for the political activists’ immediate release.

An oversized birthday card for the human rights defenders was brought to the square to be signed.

Labour Party Councillor for Burnage, Ben Clay, arrived to sign the card and show his support for the two activists.

Speaking with Mancunian MattersCouncillor Clay said: “These abuses bring shame upon the government of the UAE, and also upon those who have dealings with them.”

Dr Al-Roken is a human rights lawyer sentenced to ten years in prison in July 2013 after criticising the UAE’s leaders and its policies.

Pakistan/The Netherlands: Aasia Bibi’s lawyer concerned over his family’s security in Pakistan

November 14, 2018

Fearing for the safety of his kin, Aasia Bibi’s counsel Saiful Malook has approached the United Nations to ensure his family’s security.

Aasia Bibi had been acquitted by the Supreme Court off blasphemy charges on October 31. The decision sparked countrywide demonstrations with protesters, led by Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP), threatening the state, army and judiciary.

Aasia Bibi’s lawyer says wants to stay in Netherlands

The violent protests forced Malook to board a plane to the Netherlands on November 3. He told The Express Tribune about threats from sections of lawyers and it is difficult for him to practice in the prevailing situation.

“In the current scenario, it’s not possible for me to live in Pakistan,” the 62-year-old told AFP. “I need to stay alive as I still have to fight the legal battle for Aasia Bibi.”

Malook is currently in The Hague and has hinted on seeking political asylum.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Malook expressed concerns about his family’s safety in Pakistan. He said he had written to the UN office in Pakistan seeking security for his family. Malook was dismayed at the inadequate security provided to his family by the authorities.

Endley and James Gatdet Dak SPLM-IO leader’s spokesperson were released on 3 November after a presidential pardon announced during the peace celebration day on 31 October 2018.

Speaking to Voice of America’s South Sudan in Focus programme on Wednesday Endley said he saw Aggrey Idri in the National Security Service Headquarters (the Blue House), adding he and his friend Dong Samuel Luak were moved from the prison to another location.

“Aggrey and Dong were in the security house. But I did not see Dong, as he was kept downstairs. I only saw Aggrey,” he said during a seven minutes interview aired on Wednesday.

Kenyan authorities denied any involvement in or knowledge of the abduction. Also, South Sudanese officials denied having them in Juba prison.

In January 2018, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said they have credible reports that “the two men had been seen in custody at the National Security Services (NSS) headquarters in Juba on January 25 and 26 2017 and were then removed from this facility on January 27”.
