Crimea/Russia/Ukraine: Halya Coynash: Russia escalates attack on human rights lawyers in occupied Crimea

November 7, 2018

Russian-controlled enforcement officers burst into the offices of human rights lawyers in occupied Crimea on November 6, and handed prominent Crimean Tatar lawyer Emil Kurbedinov a ‘warning of the inadmissibility of extremism’. The surreal document was identical to that handed to two of Kurbedinov’s colleagues and a civic activist on October 27 when the officers disrupted a meeting of the Crimean Solidarity initiative. The warning could, supposedly, not be issued at that meeting since Kurbedinov was away on a work-related trip, though it is possible that this was simply a pretext for staging a second visitation.

Tajikistan: regional conference on the role and protection of lawyers

November 9, 2018

Today the ICJ, in co-operation with the Legal Policy Research Centre and the Union of Lawyers of Tajikistan, is holding a regional conference on the independence and role of lawyers, in Dushanbe.

Lawyers from Tajikistan as well as other countries of Central Asia, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Europe will discuss the legal safeguards that should apply to lawyers to ensure that they can defend the human rights of their clients and the role of bar associations in protecting the security and independence of lawyers.

They will consider the role of committees to protect the rights of lawyers, which have been established within the bar associations of several countries in the region, and how these specialized bodies can work most effectively.

A set of recommendations on the protection of lawyers in the region will be produced following the conference.

Maldives: Imprisoned Supreme Court justices tried unfairly, they must be released: Nasheed

November 8, 2018

Former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and former Justice Ali Hameed were tried unfairly and they must be released, says former president Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed said this while speaking at a rally in Meedhoo island of Addu City, Justice Saeed’s native island, and called on judicial authorities to facilitate their release.

The Criminal Court in May sentenced the apex court justices to nearly five months in prison, on charges of obstructing government administration and justice.

The justices were arrested in February, along with former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom – whom Nasheed defeated through ballots in 2008 – during the political crisis that ensued after the Supreme Court ordered the release of political prisoners.

The Philippines/HRW: Another Rights Lawyer Murdered in the Philippines

November 7, 2018

201811asia_philippines_ramos

By most accounts, Benjamin Ramos died doing exactly what he had always done as a human rights lawyer: helping his clients free of charge. On the evening of November 6, Ramos was taking a break from assisting a client when gunmen on a motorcycle shot him three times. Ramos was 56 years old.

Ramos’s murder in the central Philippine province of Negros Occidental is shocking but, sadly, not surprising in a country where impunity for extrajudicial killings and other serious rights violations, including “drug war” murders, prevails.

Lawyers like Ramos who represent the most marginalized people in the Philippines have themselves also been victims of abuse. For his work, authorities vilified Ramos as a communist and harassed his colleagues. According to the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, which he helped establish, Ramos was the 34th lawyer to have been murdered since President Rodrigo Duterte took office.

Ramos’s murder also underscores the persistence of injustice in Negros, where landlessness has bred decades-old agrarian conflict. Ramos was representing families of victims of last month’s Sagay Massacre, when nine activists were gunned down after joining a protest on a sugarcane plantation. These protests, known as “bungkalan,” have often resulted in violence in Negros and elsewhere, as peasants and farmers occupy contested property and are met with resistance from landowners. Three decades since the Philippines’ “People Power” uprising spurred demands for change, agrarian reform remains an unfulfilled promise.
