India: Legal fraternity protest cop assault

May 6, 2018

The Ranchi District Bar Association (RDBA) on Saturday observed a pen-down strike to protest the alleged assault on advocate Ashish Dubey by Garhwa SP Md Arshi and his bodyguards on May 2.

At a meeting held at the Bar association building, the outfit decided that like the Advocates Association, Jharkhand High Court, they will also hold another similar strike on May 7.

The group’s secretary and newly elected Jharkhand State Bar Council member Sanjay Vidrohi said, “We are upholders of the law and work to protect the interest of our clients. But if we don’t feel safe and protected, how can we work?”

Kundan Prakashan, another newly elected council member and an RDBA associate, said there could be no justification for the police assault on the advocate who, he claimed, was innocent.

“Police barbarity must be condemned,” Prakashan said.

About 2,000 advocates under Jamshedpur Bar Association on Saturday also observed a pen-down strike against alleged police high-handedness in Garhwa and Dhanbad.
