Turkey: Jailed former head of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish opposition says fair election impossible

May 5, 2018

Turkey’s Kurdish opposition presidential candidate, who is challenging President Tayyip Erdogan from behind prison bars, said a fair vote in next month’s election was impossible under the state of emergency.

In his first interview with international media since being named as candidate by his Peoples Democratic Party (HDP) on Friday, Selahattin Demirtas told Reuters opposition parties will face huge obstacles campaigning for votes.

“Demonstrations are banned, talking is banned, criticizing the government is banned, even defending peace is considered terror propaganda,” he said. “Hundreds of opposition journalists are arrested, dozens of TV and radio channels are closed.

“It is impossible for there to be fair elections in such an environment,” Demirtas said in a hand-written response to questions submitted by Reuters to his lawyers.

Demirtas and the HDP face even greater challenges than other opposition parties in running against Erdogan, Turkey’s most successful modern politician. The party’s former co-leader has been in jail for a year and a half on security charges and faces up to 142 years in prison if convicted.

Announcing his candidacy on Friday, the party released images of a visibly thinner yet smiling Demirtas dressed in a white shirt and black trousers in the courtyard of his prison in the northwestern province of Edirne.

A human rights lawyer by training, he is one of Turkey’s best-known politicians, winning votes beyond his core Kurdish constituency in the 2015 election to turn the HDP into the second-largest opposition party in parliament.

Self-proclaimed NRM general Miguna Miguna has said he will return to the country on May 16.

This will be his second attempt to return to the country after his second deportation in March.

In a tweet on Saturday, the controversial lawyer revealed that he will land at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on May 16.

“I AM RETURNING TO KENYA ON MAY 16, 2018. I am a Kenyan citizen by birth. The High Court has ordered Fred Matiangi, GKihalangwa, JBoinnet and Kinoti 13 times to issue me with a valid Kenyan passport and facilitate my return to Kenya as a Kenyan unconditionally,”read the tweet.

On March 30, Miguna’s return was thwarted by the Immigration Department after he refused to present his travel documents for clearance at JKIA.

Miguna’s troubles began after his participation in the swearing-in of opposition Chief Raila Odinga as the people’s president at Uhuru Park on January 30, 2018.

In his botched return, the outspoken NRM leader Miguna claimed in several posts that he was drugged and shipped to Dubai unconscious.

“I woke up in Dubai and the despots are here insisting that I must travel on to London. I’m sick. My ribs and body are hurting all over. This is a travesty of justice,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Kathua Rape Victim's Lawyer Gets A Fist Of Approval From Emma Watson

“Harry Potter” star Emma Watson on Friday tweeted in support of lawyer Deepika Singh Rajawat, who is fighting the case of a minor girl whose rape and murder in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir sent shockwaves globally.

Ms Watson on Friday shared an article about “How the Kathua rape case lawyer is a force to reckon with” and wrote: “All power to Deepika Singh Rajawat.”

The British actor has been a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and she has actively dedicated her efforts towards the empowerment of young women.

The article shared by Ms Watson brings attention to Ms Rajawat’s confident and professional demeanour.

Ms Rajawat has been representing the family of the eight-year-old girl whose body was recovered from Rassana forest in Kathua on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area.
The Supreme Court had earlier ordered adequate security for Ms Rajawat, the Kathua rape victim’s family and to Talib Hussain, a member of the Bakerwal community who is helping the victim’s family.

The victim was reportedly held captive inside a temple and was sedated before being raped, tortured and murdered.

The case is ongoing in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Ms Rajawat has been in defiance against her own colleagues in the Jammu Bar Association who allegedly warned her against taking up the case.

The Kathua rape case has sparked nation-wide outrage and has given way to protests across the country.

France: Le Conseil constitutionnel renvoie l’avocat lillois Frank Berton devant l’instance disciplinaire

India: Jailed for 15 months, lawyer in Maoist case granted bail

May 5, 2018

The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Friday granted bail to an alleged Maoist advocate, A Murugan, who has been in jail for fifteen months in a case filed by the Q-branch CID under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and IPC.
The petitioner’s counsel said that according to the prosecution the police had registered a case against one Kala and Chandra based on the allegation that they belonged to CPI (Maoist), a banned organization. When the duo was staying at Vengamedu in Karur, they recruited cadre to the organization. On the basis of the confessional statement of Kala, the police booked the petitioner who was an advocate practising in Madurai. It was alleged that the petitioner used to communicate information from the party high command (Maoist) to Kala and vice versa.

The petitioner claimed that he was in no way connected with the offence that was also evident from the final report of the police. The petitioner had been in legal practice since 2004 and had mainly appeared in cases related to human rights violations. He had defended many people who had been branded as Maoists.

China/USA: Top Chinese Rights Lawyer Banned From Traveling to United States

May 4, 2018

Human rights lawyers Sui Muqing (L) and Ding Jiaxi (R), in undated photo.

Authorities in the Chinese capital have prevented a top human rights attorney from boarding a plane to the United States on “national security” grounds, RFA has learned.

Ding Jiaxi, who has previously served jail time for calling on top officials of the ruling Chinese Communist Party to reveal details of their wealth, was stopped by police at Beijing International Airport on Thursday as he tried to board a plane to visit his wife and daughter in the U.S.

Ding said he was at the departure gate on Thursday, preparing to board the aircraft, when he was approached by two unidentified officers.

“Two of them came over and announced to me that they had a notification from the Beijing police department that I was a threat to national security, and I was to be prevented from leaving the country,” Ding told RFA.

“At no point during this process did they tell me their names, nor did they show me any official ID,” he said. “They also refused to give me the notification in writing.”

Ding said he didn’t know the reason for the travel ban, as he had been able to visit his wife Luo Shengchun and the couple’s daughter in the U.S. last year.
