China/Germany: Germany calls for release of Chinese rights lawyer arrested for inciting subversion

February 1, 2018

The German commissioner for human rights on Wednesday called for the immediate release of disbarred rights lawyer Yu Wensheng, who was arrested by the Chinese authorities on Jan. 19 and later charged with inciting subversion.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has overseen a sweeping crackdown on human rights activism in China that has seen hundreds of rights lawyers and activists detained, dozens arrested and some handed lengthy prison sentences.
Yu, an outspoken critic of the government clampdown who had worked to defend fellow lawyers who were arrested in the sweep, was disbarred on Jan. 15, days before he was detained by authorities outside his home in Beijing.

UK: Tony Fisher: ‘Rights are precious and are easily lost’

January 31, 2018

Solicitor Tony Fisher, Senior solicitor at Fisher Jones Greenwood in Colchester, awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Modern Law Awards.

LIFETIME achievement awards are not given out lightly. The recipients are often shining lights in their fields who have, as the name suggests, a lifetime of achievement behind them.

For Tony Fisher, senior partner at Colchester law firm Fisher Jones Greenwood, recognition at this year’s Modern Law Awards is a token of his tireless enthusiasm.

Towards the end of the cases he realised he was not going to be able juggle it all. He stopped the European case work but joined the Human Rights Committee at the Law Society, the representative body for solicitors.

He became chairman of the Human Rights Committee in 2007, making interventions on behalf of lawyers being persecuted in other countries. Other challenges include a lack of opportunities for younger trainees.

Turkey: [UPDATE] AI board chair Kılıç detained after another court ruled for his release

February 1, 2018

A Turkish court late on Wednesday ordered that Taner Kılıç, chairman of the board of Amnesty International Turkey, be kept in detention after another court had earlier in the day ruled for his release, Turkish media reported.

A prosecutor on Wednesday evening appealed Kılıç’s release to the Istanbul 36th High Criminal Court, which agreed and decided that the human rights defender’s detention should continue.

Andrew Gardner, AI’s senior advisor and researcher for Turkey, tweeted earlier in the day that “the prosecutor appealed the court decision to release him. We don’t know if the appeal court has made a decision. What we do know is that there has been an arrest warrant issued and that Taner has been taken out of prison and into Gendarmerie custody.”

Kılıç has been behind bars since June 6 over alleged links to the faith-based Gülen movement, which is accused by the Turkish government of being behind a failed coup last year.

A lawyer, a founding member of AI Turkey and chairman of its board of directors since 2014, Kılıç was arrested by an İzmir court on June 9 along with 22 other attorneys as part of an investigation into the Gülen movement.
