Mexico: Liberan a abogado Salinas

27/01/18

Liberan a abogado Salinas

Egypt/Day of the Endangered Lawyer: El Día Internacional del Abogado amenazado

24/01/18

sp1b5349

Guatemala: Ex-Guatemala Supreme Court president shot dead

January 27, 2018

Crime 703x422

The ex-president of the Guatemalan Supreme Court was shot dead on Friday during an incident on the outskirts of the capital Guatemala City, according to emergency personnel.

Jose Arturo Sierra, who presided over the high court between 2013 and 2014, was attacked by unknown perpetrators while traveling by road. He was taken to hospital where he died, authorities announced on Twitter.

While officials have not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the attack, local press reported witness accounts of two people firing at Sierra, 72, from a motorcycle.

The CSJ “strongly” denounced the crime, which in a statement it said “adds to the widespread violence” in Guatemala.

The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala echoed the condemnation, and recognised Sierra’s “vocation as a judge that he demonstrated in different positions in the Guatemalan justice system.”

Violence in Guatemala leaves thousands dead every year, with around half attributed by authorities to drug trafficking and activity related to the Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gangs. A total of 5,384 people were killed last year, mostly in shootings.

South Sudan: LRWC Renews Calls to Disclose Information About and Conduct Investigation Into Disappearance of Dong Samuel Luak and Aggrey Idri | Letter

January 24, 2018

Lawyers Rights Watch Canada (LRWC) is a committee of lawyers, students and academics who campaign internationally for advocacy rights, advocates in danger, and on rule of law issues. We also engage in legal research and education about international human rights law. I am a lawyer and a partner of a law firm in Canada, Cohen Highley LLP, and I am writing to you to ask that you intervene with respect to proceedings involving the above named individuals.

On June 1, 2017 we wrote to you about Dong Samuel Luak who went missing in January of 2017. Mr. Aggrey Idri also went missing on or about January 24, 2017. Both men were taken to a facility at the National Security Service (NSS) in Juba, South Sudan on January 25, 2017. The whereabouts of both men and their fate remain unknown a year later.

Consistent with our previous correspondence, we urge the authorities of South Sudan to do the following:

  1. immediately disclose the fate and whereabouts of Dong Samuel Luak and Aggrey Idri;
  2. make public the reasons for their continued detention if they are in custody and, unless a legal basis for continued detention can be demonstrated, release them without delay;
  3. ensure that Dong Samuel Luak and Aggrey Idri are not subjected to torture and other ill-treatment while in detention;
  4. grant Dong Samuel Luak and Aggrey Idri access to adequate medical care, access to lawyers of their own choosing, and allow visits from their family members; and,

Turkey: Head of local lawyers’ association sentenced to 9 years in prison

January 25, 2018

Head of local lawyers’ association sentenced to 9 years in prison

An Adana court sentenced the last president of the now-defunct Nizam Lawyers’ Association, identified as S.U., to 9 years in jail on terror charges.

S.U., a lawyer who chaired the Adana-based Nizam Lawyers’ Association until it was closed in a post-coup emergency decree, appeared during his final hearing on Thursday.

Under arrest for some time over ties to the Gulen movement, S.U. pleaded not guilty on charges of membership to an armed terror group, and asked for his release.

Yet, the court in charge turned down his request, giving him 9-year prison sentence.

Meanwhile, another Adana court sentenced a former judge who was earlier dismissed from his job over Gulen links, to 7.5 years in jail the same day.

Turkish government accuses the Gülen movement of masterminding a failed putsch on July 15, 2016, and considers it a terrorist organization. The movement denies involvement in the coup and terror accusations.
