India: Panellist: Dissent by SC judges politically motivated

Strong opinions were voiced at a panel discussion organized by NU’s Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law on the recent development where senior Supreme Court judges went public with their grievances. Panellist SM Rajan, a senior legal academician, said ‘all four judges must be impeached and jailed’ so that nobody else within the judiciary ‘dares’ to break convention.
Rajan said, “It’s my opinion that the rebel judges must be taught a lesson because they have breached the protocols of judiciary. Justice Karnan was jailed for contempt of court then how can these four be allowed to go scot free?” Rajan holds a ‘Doctor of Law (LLD)’, the highest academic degree in the legal fraternity. He also opined that ‘political motives’ were behind the step taken by the four SC judges. “I strongly believe that the whole thing is politically motivated because there is no reason to be discontent about roster management. The Chief Justice of India is the master of roster, so why complain?” said Rajan.

The other three panellists, all lawyers, differed, saying there was no concrete information available in public domain that would suggest a political reason for the SC judges’ decision. Noted lawyer Firdos Mirza said, “The judges themselves have made it clear in the press conference that the major issue was about roster. Immediately, there’s nothing to suggest otherwise.”

The eighth annual Day of the Endangered Lawyer will focus on Egypt, on 24 January 2018.

The Day of the Endangered Lawyer foundation is based in the Netherlands. It has developed a wide range of activities around the world on 24 January to raise awareness of lawyers who are being harassed, silenced, pressured, threatened, persecuted, tortured and murdered for their work as lawyers.

The day is commemorated on 24 January because on 24 January 1977 four lawyers and a coworker were murdered at their place of work in Madrid, Spain.

Of the perpetrators, who were affiliated with extreme right-wing parties and organizations, one was sentenced to 15 years in prison, another fled to Brazil and the third ended up in jail in Bolivia for drug smuggling.

In a report on Egypt, the foundation says many human rights organisations, among them Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, IDHAE, ELDH and the International Commission of Jurists confirm that the Egyptian authorities “have moved beyond scaremongering and are now rapidly taking concrete steps to shut down the last critical voices in the country’s human rights community.”

Einladung zur Podiumsdiskussion von Amnesty International & dem Deutschen Anwaltverein

Die Lage der Anwaltschaft in der Türkei
Mittwoch, 24. Januar 2018, 18.30 Uhr

DAV-Haus, Littenstraße 11, 10179 Berlin
(S-/U-Bahnhof Alexanderplatz, U-Bahnhof Klosterstraße)
Sehr geehrte Damen & Herren,
