India: Lawyer ‘attacked’ by cops seeks Rs 25L relief

Advocate C Rajarathinam, who was allegedly attack by police personnel in Tirunelveli district, causing humiliation to him and his family, has filed a case before the Madras high court bench demanding a direction to the state home secretary to provide him Rs 25 lakh compensation. On this petition, justice R Mahadevan directed the government to get instruction and adjourned the case.
When the case came up for hearing, the petitioner narrated the entire episode. According to it, the petitioner lodged a compliant to Palavoour police against one Ykkoupuram Isaac Selvakumar, but police did not act on it. He then filed a petition before the judicial magistrate court against the said person and the police personnel concerned for failure to discharge their duty. The petition was posted to be heard on November 10.

In this backdrop, a team of police personnel trespassed his house on November 4 midnight and allegedly attacked him. They also abused his wife and used obscene language at his family members and snatched away their mobile phones. Later, the police personnel took him to a police station at Radhapuram. There too, he was attacked mercilessly using a lathi and iron rod by hanging him upside down. Thereafter, police took him to the Uvari police station. Then police started an inquiry about his complaint and issued a life threat to him.
