Turkey: Turkey charges Amnesty International chief with membership of `terror´ group

June 10, 2017

Amnesty International’s chairman in Turkey has been arrested on charges of membership of a terror group, the country’s official news agency said.

Anadolu news agency reported on Saturday that lawyer Taner Kilic was arrested in the western province of Izmir with five other lawyers who are accused of using an encrypted communication programme.

Kilic was detained on Tuesday and is awaiting trial.

ByLock is allegedly used by the network of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, which Turkey blames for orchestrating last summer’s coup attempt.

Burma: Six Ko Ni witnesses in court

June 10, 2017

Yangon North District Court examined six witnesses in the case on the assassination of Ko Ni, legal adviser to the National League for Democracy, yesterday.

The four witnesses included a police major, captain, corporal and lance corporal and the manager of Nay Pyi Taw Herbal Park

Nay La, a prosecution lawyer, said: “Six witnesses were called in the case against fugitive Aung Win KhaingThe court mainly examined four out of six witnesses. Today there was one distinct point. According to the testimony of witness Myint Khaing, Aung Win Khaing visited his company’s office on around February 10. Aung Win Khaing was in Nay Pyi Taw two weeks before the police searched for him.”

Suspected ringleader Aung Win Khaing was last seen at the Herbal Park.

Kyi Lin, Aung Win Zaw, Zeyar Phyo, Aung Win Tun and Aung Win Khaing have been charged.

Ko Ni was shot by Kyi Lin at close range on January 29 when he arrived back with a delegation led by Information Minister Pe Myint from Indonesia.

On February 15, the President’s Office said Aung Win Khaing, a retired lieutenant-colonel, ordered the assassination of Ko Ni by paying Ks100 million.

The victim died on the spot and a taxi driver, Nay Win, who tried to capture the assassin, was also killed.

UK: Law firm Leigh Day cleared over Iraq murder compensation claims

June 9, 2017

Anna Crowther, Martyn Day and Sapna Malik arrive at the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal in London

The law firm Leigh Day and three of its solicitors have been cleared of all the allegations of professional misconduct they faced over Iraq war murder compensation claims.

The not guilty verdicts delivered by the solicitor’s disciplinary tribunal (SDT) in London are a severe setback for the Solicitors Regulation Authority, which launched the costly prosecution, and the defence secretary, Michael Fallon, who had called for legal action.

The SRA can appeal against the findings of the seven-week trial, which is believed to have cost as much as £10m and came after a three-year investigation by the authority.

None of the 20 charges against Martyn Day, Sapna Malik and Anna Crowther, or the London law firm, were proved.

Summing up the panel’s findings, the SDT chairman, Simon Tinkler, said it had “found that none of the allegations made have been proved”.

The case involved allegations over the way in which legal claims – that British soldiers tortured and murdered Iraqi detainees after the so-called battle for Danny Boy near Basra in 2004 – were pursued.

Turkey: Ex-top judges face jail over FETO charges

June 9, 2017

Turkey: Ex-top judges face jail over FETO charges

Ankara prosecutors filed indictments on Friday against three former Supreme Court justices accused of being part of the terrorist group blamed for last July’s defeated coup in Turkey, according to a judicial source.

The indictments seek up to 15 years in prison for Ali Karagulmez, Ilhami Dal, and Mustafa Kemal Tepedelen, all charged with membership in the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The indictments also mention the ex-judges’ alleged involvement in restructuring the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors.

According to Turkey’s government, FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 250 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.
