Lawyer representing detained lawyer detained over coup charges

O.G., a lawyer representing his colleague D.U. who was earlier detained for his/her alleged use of mobile app ByLock, was taken into custody over same charges.

ByLock is a smartphone application that Turkish authorities claim to be the top communication tool among followers of the Gülen movement which the government accuses of masterminding the July 15, 2016 coup attempt.

At least 190 people have been detained as part of an Ankara-based investigation into the movement as of late May 5.

D.U. stopped by Ankara Police Headquarters to accompany one of his/her clients, who was detained in May 5 operation. Upon his allegedly suspicious behaviours, police interrogated D.U. as well and detained him after finding out that he uses ByLock, state-run Anadolu Agency.

Police detained the second lawyer, known by initials O.G., who arrived in the police station for D.U., for allegedly using ByLock, as well.

At least 120,000 people have been detained over their alleged or real ties to the movement since July 15 coup attempt.

China: LU student says he will deliver petition seeking release of his father to Embassy of China on May 9

May 5, 2017

Liberty University student Chongyu Xia announced Friday he will be delivering his petition for the release of his father to the Embassy of China in Washington, D.C., on May 9.

Chongyu Xia’s father, Xia Lin,  was arrested Nov. 8, 2014, and was accused of “gambling and fraud,” according to the Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), a coalition of Chinese and international human rights non-governmental organizations dedicated to the promotion of human rights through peaceful efforts, according to its website.

Chongyu Xia said his father never had a gambling problem, and Xia Lin’s arrest is based on his career as a human rights lawyer.

“We’re pretty sure this is political persecution,” Chongyu Xia said in an April 25 interview.

On Friday, an official with the Chinese Embassy said no one was available to comment.

Locations of the 6,280 petition supporters vary from the Netherlands to Illinois to Mexico, according to the petition.

“I have got 2600 hand [written] signatures and 6000 plus online,” Chongyu Xia said in a Facebook post.
