Cameroon: Ayah’s Lawyers to File Appeal Against Illegal Detention

March 23, 2017

(Ayah Paul Abine, serving Advocate General of the Supreme Court of Cameroon)

An appeal to counter the decision of the Mfoundi High Court remanding Ayah Paul Abine will be filed at the Court of Appeal of the Centre Region, Ayah’s lawyers have said.

Ndong Christopher Nveh, one of the defense counsels, told The Cameroon Journal by telephone they are working on an appeal which they will file in good time. “We will file the appeal before the five day window frame elapses,” Ndong disclosed.

On Tuesday, the Mfoundi High Court rejected a Habeas Corpus demanding the unconditional release of the Deputy Attorney General of the Supreme Court. Ayah was arrested and has since January 21, been incarcerated at the National Gendarmerie Headquarters in Yaoundé.

Luc Kisob, another defense lawyer, is quoted by another publication as upholding that Ayah’s arrest was illegal. Affirming that nobody is above the law, the attorney-at-law said “what they [Ayah’s lawyers] are saying is that the law should be respected if proceedings have to be carried out against anybody.”

The Jury has selected human rights defenders from Ukraine, Nicaragua, Vietnam, South Africa and Kuwait as finalists for the 2017 Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk:

emil-kurbedinov.jpg

Emil Kurbedinov, Crimea/Ukraine

Emil Kurbedinov is a Crimean Tatar and human rights lawyer. Since the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, Emil has been defending the persecuted Crimean Tatar minority, civil society activists and journalists. He also provides emergency response and documentation of rights violations during raids and searches of activists’ homes. In January 2017, masked representatives from Crimea’s Centre for Counteracting Extremism detained Emil and took him to a local directorate of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) for interrogation. A district court found him guilty of “propagandizing for extremist organisations” and sentenced him to ten days in detention.

China/Australia: Bob Carr’s backroom manouevering ends Chinese nightmare for Sydney academic

April 3, 2017

Sydney professor Feng Chongyi has arrived back at Sydney Airport, Australia after being detained in China for a week and interrogated by authorities. SUPPLIED: ABC NEWS.

FORMER Foreign Minister Bob Carr’s public silence on the fate of a Sydney academic held by the Chinese might have baffled some.

He was in China, had plenty of opportunity to pump up Australian outrage, and could have done it face-to-face with the Chinese leadership.

But the former NSW premier had taken the advice of a Chinese official on how to deal with the case of detained University of Technology Sydney professor Chongyi Feng, who was released from Chinese custody yesterday.

Professor Feng, a teacher in Chinese studies, had been blocked from returning to Sydney twice and was interrogated for more than a week for “endangering state security”.

As the Chinese official put it, back room inquiries might help, but “the microphone way” would only worsen Mr Feng’s plight.

Further, other sources suggested Mr Feng’s detention had not been authorised at the top levels and the Chinese government wanted the issue settled in the national interest.
