The Philippines: Palace backs gag order on de Lima

March 5, 2017

The Palace giving full support to the Department of Justice’s (DoJ) petition with the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court (RTC) to gag Sen. Leila de Lima from discussing the drug trafficking charges filed against her as presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said the request was “nothing new” since it is in accordance the sub-judice doctrine.
“Should the court grant the motion, we expect all parties to abide by it to preclude any undue pressure to the judge hearing the cases or any influence that may condition the minds of the public on the merits of the case,” Abella said.
De Lima in a statement out of her Camp Crame detention cell said rumors circulated on social media on reports about her alleged suicide attempt inside her detention cell in Camp Crame “should be viewed as a campaign by the Duterte administration to condition the minds of public.”
“These fake ‘alternative fact’ news are making the rounds and being encouraged by Duterte’s lapdogs, such as Speaker (Pantaleon) Alvarez, in order to condition the minds of the people that the worst can happen to me while in detention at the PNP Custodial Center, without any fault of the Duterte regime because I supposedly already lost my mind after my arrest,” de Lima said.
