Lawyers and activists for environmental and human rights will hold a requiem and indignation rally on Tuesday for Mia Mascariñas-Green, an environmental lawyer killed in Bohol last week.
“Our society simply has no place for lawless killings. No one deserves to be killed especially as how Attorney Mia was cold-bloodedly gunned down. Nobody should be killed most especially so because of one’s advocacy and beliefs,” the Alternative Law Groups said in an emailed statement.
ALG will hold the requiem with the Environmental Legal Assistance Center, the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation and the Manila Observatory on Tuesday evening at the observatory at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City.
“This will also serve as an indignation gathering of environmental and human rights lawyers and activists,” ALG said.
According to a Freeman report, Green was killed last Wednesday afternoon in Tagbilaran City by men on motorcycles while she was driving with her three children and a helper.
Police believe the killing is related to a property dispute over a resort in Panglao that Green was working on at the time. One of the persons of interest in the case is hotel owner Lloyd Lancer Gonzaga who is on the opposite side of the dispute.
Tagbilaran police served a search warrant on a hotel in Panglao island on Friday but the suspect in the killing, Romarico Templado Benigi-an, had just left when police arrived.
