Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer You Feizhu has been stopped by police from leaving the country, six months after he was detained for 15 days for demanding to see his clients in prison.
Mr You, of Chongqing, was caught at Beijing International Airport on the weekend as he waited to go through security to board a flight to the US. He is the latest in a number of lawyers to be detained, including high-profile solicitor Wang Yu who is under arrest without being charged.
Mr You recently defended a 16-year-old blogger who was arrested for “causing trouble” after he wrote that he did not believe the police investigation into the death of a bar manager in his hometown. Yang Hui was held for a week and released after a campaign by human rights lawyers. He was the youngest person to be arrested under the central government’s current crackdown on internet users “spreading online rumours”.
